Carved Hei Tiki, New Zealand Greenstone
This very special tiki has an incredible amount of detail carved into the surface. A beautiful mid-green colour, the tiki is displayed on his side with a black waxed thread cord tied into adjustable sliding knots.
The Tiki is a very ancient symbol and is by far the least understood. Some say the Tiki came from the stars and that he was the first man of the world. Other theories state that Tiki represents the human embryo. It is believed to have a strong link to the sea - often being depicted with webbed feet.
Perhaps the most accepted meaning of the Tiki is fertility as it is often carved with the hands placed on the loins. Tiki is also believed to bring good luck and keep evil spirits away.
This pendant was hand carved on the South Island of New Zealand.
